Your Autumn Deep Clean Checklist — Get Ready for Closed-Windows Season

Autumn is the last easy window to deep clean before doors and windows stay shut for months. Everything you deal with now — dust, damp, clutter — gets harder to shift in January.

This checklist focuses on the pre-winter jobs UK homes genuinely need: heating readiness, entryway defence against wet weather, and textiles that will carry the house's air for the next six months.

Heating and air

  • Bleed radiators and vacuum the fins and tops
  • Dust or wash radiator covers — they burn dust all winter
  • Book the boiler service if it's due
  • Clean extractor fans in bathrooms and kitchen; damp season is coming
  • Wipe window frames and tracks — closing up traps the summer grime

Entryway defence

Wet weather means mud, leaves and salt walked through the house. A planned entryway stops it travelling.

  • A sturdy doormat outside and a washable one inside
  • A shoe rack or tray by the door — and the habit of using it
  • Wash current door mats and hang them to dry fully
  • Wipe the front door, handle and letterbox

Textiles and soft furnishings

  • Wash winter bedding before it goes on the bed
  • Vacuum sofas and armchairs, including the crevices
  • Launder or air heavy throws and blankets
  • Deep vacuum carpets — you'll be on them far more now
  • Check for condensation mould early around window seals and treat it

Kitchen reset

  • Deep clean the oven before the roast season begins
  • Clear the freezer and make room for batch cooking
  • Wipe cupboard tops — the grease shelf nobody sees
  • Check and clear the extractor filter

Last of the light

  • Clean windows inside and out while the weather allows
  • Dust light fittings and add brighter bulbs for dark evenings
  • Wash interior glass and mirrors to maximise available daylight

Tips that make it faster

  • Do the heating jobs first — if something's wrong with a radiator, you want to know in September, not during a cold snap.
  • Condensation is autumn's real enemy: wipe windows each morning and keep a small gap in vents.
  • Pair this with a weekly clean through winter and spring will be half as much work.
