The Room-by-Room Spring Cleaning Checklist
Spring is the natural reset button: the days get longer, the windows open again, and every bit of dust that hid away over winter suddenly shows itself in the daylight.
This checklist walks through your home room by room, then finishes with the forgotten spots — skirting boards, light fittings, behind the fridge — that make the difference between a tidy home and a properly clean one.
Work top to bottom and left to right in each room: dust falls, so cleaning the floor first means doing it twice.
Kitchen
The kitchen collects grease you can't always see. Warm soapy water won't shift it — use a degreaser or a paste of bicarbonate of soda on stubborn patches.
- Empty and wipe out the fridge and freezer; bin out-of-date food and defrost if needed
- Degrease the hob, extractor hood and splashback
- Run an empty hot wash in the dishwasher with a cleaner, and wipe the door seals
- Descale the kettle and wipe the toaster crumb tray
- Clean inside the microwave and wipe the oven door glass
- Clear out kitchen cupboards and drawers; wipe shelves before restocking
- Bin and recycling bin: wash inside and out
Bathrooms
- Descale the shower head, taps and glass screen
- Scrub grout with a bicarb-and-vinegar paste; rinse well
- Wash or replace the shower curtain; launder bath mats
- Clean the toilet tank, seat hinges and behind the pedestal
- Wipe extractor fan covers — dusty fans stop pulling moisture out
- Clear the plugholes and flush with hot water
Bedrooms
- Launder duvets, pillows and mattress protectors if the labels allow
- Vacuum the mattress and rotate or flip it
- Dust and wipe wardrobes, skirting boards and picture rails
- Vacuum under the bed and behind furniture
- Swap heavy winter bedding for lighter layers
Living areas and hallway
- Move the sofa and vacuum underneath and behind
- Wash hard floors with the right product for the finish — never soaking wood
- Dust shelves, electronics and tops of door frames
- Clean interior glass, mirrors and window sills
- Shake out door mats and wash them
The forgotten spots
These are the jobs that separate a quick tidy from a true spring clean — and the ones we're asked about most.
- Light fittings, lamp shades and ceiling corners (cobwebs love them)
- Skirting boards and door frames throughout
- Radiator tops and fins — vacuum with a brush head
- Behind and under large appliances
- Windows, inside and out, and window tracks
- Door handles, light switches and banisters — wipe with disinfectant
Tips that make it faster
- Do one room per day across a week instead of one heroic weekend — you're far more likely to finish.
- Open windows while you clean; ventilation dries surfaces faster and lifts that 'clean' smell.
- Keep a caddy per floor of the house so you're never hunting for supplies upstairs.
- If the list feels too big, book a cleaner for the heavy jobs (oven, cupboards, skirting) and keep the upkeep to yourself.
