How Often Should You Clean Your Home? A Room-by-Room Guide
Most people either clean everything too often or nothing until it's visibly bad. The truth is that different jobs run on very different clocks — the kitchen worktop wants attention daily, while the inside of your wardrobes can wait a year.
Here's a realistic schedule based on how homes are actually used, so you can spend effort where it makes a difference.
Daily (5–15 minutes)
- Kitchen worktops and hob — wiped after cooking
- Washing up or loading the dishwasher
- Bathroom sink and taps given a quick wipe
- Tidying floors of crumbs and obvious mess
Weekly
This is the core rhythm. If you only do one thing from this guide, keep a weekly floor-and-bathroom pass going.
- Vacuum all floors, including under furniture you can move easily
- Mop hard floors
- Clean the toilet, shower and bath properly
- Change hand and tea towels
- Dust surfaces, shelves and electronics
- Wipe fridge shelves that look marked
Monthly
- Wipe skirting boards and door frames
- Clean interior windows and mirrors properly
- Descale the kettle and clean the microwave inside
- Vacuum sofa cushions and under the cushions
- Wash the bin and recycling container
- Clear drains with a plughole cleaner or hot water and soda crystals
Quarterly (every 3 months)
- Move large furniture and clean underneath
- Wash duvets, mattress protectors and pillow covers
- Vacuum the mattress and rotate it
- Clean light fittings, extractor fans and tops of cupboards
- Degrease the oven and extractor filter
Yearly
- Deep clean the oven, including between the glass panels
- Wash curtains and clean blinds
- Shampoo carpets or rug-wash hard floors
- Clear out wardrobes and cupboard shelves, top to bottom
- Gutters and exterior windows (or the pros, safely)
Tips that make it faster
- Busy household? A weekly two-hour clean covers the weekly list and part of the monthly one — that's exactly what our USparkle Go hourly service is designed for.
- Pet owners: add one extra vacuum a week; fur builds up faster than it shows.
- Allergy sufferers should prioritise the quarterly bedding wash and mattress vacuum above almost everything else.
