Kitchen Deep Clean Guide: Oven, Appliances and Cupboards
A kitchen can look clean and still be harbouring a film of grease on the cupboard tops, months of coffee residue in the machine and limescale quietly building in the kettle.
This guide covers the jobs a surface wipe never reaches. Set aside two to three hours, or hand the list to a professional deep clean.
The oven (45–60 minutes)
Grease inside an oven is baked-on carbon. Bicarbonate paste left overnight, or a dedicated oven cleaner, does the work — you're just removing the residue.
- Remove racks and soak in hot water with soda crystals
- Apply oven cleaner or bicarb paste to the cavity; leave for the stated time
- Scrub, then wipe with a damp microfibre cloth until no residue remains
- Clean between the glass panels if your door opens for access
- Degrease the hob, knobs and extractor hood filter
Fridge and freezer (30 minutes)
- Bin expired food; wipe every shelf and drawer with warm soapy water
- Pull out a drawer track's worth of crumbs from the seals with a dry brush first
- Wipe door seals — they hold mould and spills
- Defrost the freezer if ice is building past 5mm
- Vacuum the coils at the back if accessible — it improves efficiency
Cupboards and drawers (30–40 minutes)
- Empty one cupboard at a time — never all at once
- Vacuum crumbs before wiping; dry crumbs turn to paste otherwise
- Wipe shelves, corners and the tops of doors
- Bin anything expired; note what needs using up
- Line shelves if you want faster cleans next time
Small appliances and sink (20 minutes)
- Descale the kettle; empty and wipe the toaster tray
- Run a cleaning cycle in the dishwasher and coffee machine
- Clear and rinse the sink trap; descale taps and the draining board
- Wipe bin inside and out, then leave to dry
The invisible layer (15 minutes)
- Wipe the tops of wall cupboards and the fridge
- Clean skirting boards and the floor edges under cabinets
- Mop behind and, if safe to move, under the fridge and washing machine
- Finish with the floor: corners and edges, not just the middle
Tips that make it faster
- Ventilate while you work — degreasers and oven cleaners need airflow.
- Never mix cleaning chemicals; bleach and descaler together produce dangerous fumes.
- A bicarb paste (three parts bicarbonate of soda to one part water) is safe on most surfaces and costs pennies.
- A professional kitchen deep clean — oven, cupboards, appliances, floor — usually takes one cleaner 2–3 hours.
